Artizlab Classic 35 Compared with Leica Summilux 35mm FLE II – User Test
Share
Photographer John K. Kraus (@johnkraus | johnkrausphotography.com) recently shared his personal test comparing the Artizlab Classic 35mm f/1.4 with the Leica Summilux 35mm FLE II. He captured five sets of images, mostly at f/1.4, and ensured that any adjustments in Capture One were applied equally to both lenses for a fair comparison.

According to John, the center sharpness of the Artizlab is closer to the Summilux than expected. He notes that the Artizlab is not soft at f/1.4 aside from user error, and while the Summilux is sharper overall, the difference at the center is not dramatic.
The real contrast emerges in the mid-frame and corners. Wide open, the Artizlab shows softness and strong character, whereas the Summilux remains sharp and clean across the frame. Interestingly, John mentions that in some cases, he actually prefers the Artizlab rendering for its artistic qualities.
One of the biggest surprises from his test was that the Artizlab shows less vignetting than the Leica, especially at wider apertures—something unexpected given the significant price difference.
If there’s one limitation, John highlights the minimum focusing distance. The Summilux allows close focus down to 0.4m, which is meaningful for portraiture. The Artizlab’s 1m minimum (or ideally 0.7m) would be more versatile for closer subjects.

Overall, John concludes that the Artizlab Classic 35 delivers impressive sharpness in the center, less vignetting than expected, and a unique rendering style in the corners—making it a compelling option for photographers who appreciate both character and affordability.
